Ipswich Museum

About Ipswich Museum

Located in a historic Victorian building close to the town centre, Ipswich Museum is a fascinating and unique venue that gives you and your guests the opportunity to explore Ipswich’s past.

The Museum as it stands was built in 1881 to house the extensive collections of the previous museum. It survives today as a prime example of a Victorian museum and was used extensively in its early years for lectures, displays and the education of Suffolk people.

Today, it contains wonderful collections covering the history of both Ipswich and Suffolk from prehistoric times to the present day. The Museum also has vast natural history collections as well as a breath-taking ethnographic collection, displaying exotic and unique objects from around the world.

The Victorian Natural History Gallery, which stands as the hub of the museum, is the permanent home of local celebrities Wool-I-Am the Woolly Mammoth and Rosie the Rhino.
